A court decision, an act or a file in a language you do not read can show in its translation into the language of your screens. This translation is a machine translation: an AI model makes it, and no person checks it. Use it to understand the text, and always cite the original.
How to turn it on
The translated view is off until you turn it on. Open Settings → Account and, in the Translated view block, turn on Show documents in translation. The setting is personal: each member of your organization turns it on or off for themselves.
You can also use the switch at the top of the source pane: Original, or the name of your interface language, for example English. The switch and the setting are the same setting.
The switch shows only when the language of the document is different from the interface language. For example, with English screens, it shows for a Dutch, French or Polish decision. With Dutch screens, it does not show for a Dutch decision.
In the source pane
When the view is on, the pane shows the document in translation, paragraph by paragraph. To see the original of a paragraph, click the paragraph or press the language mark next to it (Show the original): the original opens below the translation. Click again to close it. The paragraph that the answer quotes is highlighted as a whole in the translation, and the original highlights the exact words of the quotation. On a wide screen, a click on a highlighted paragraph scrolls the chat to its reference number, as in the original. To open the original of such a paragraph, press the language mark. To add a bookmark, open the original of the paragraph and select the words in it.
The service translates the parts of the document that you read: first the part around the quotation, then the parts you scroll to. To translate all of it, press Translate the whole document. A window shows how many parts are not translated yet and the most credits they can cost. Press Translate to start. You can press Stop at any time, and the parts that are already translated stay.
If a part could not be translated, it shows the original text with Not translated. Press Try again to translate it again.
In the translation of an uploaded file, the hidden names have no dotted underline. To see what the model does not see, choose Original. See What the model sees.
In the answer
When the view is on, a quotation from a source in another language shows in your language, with a dotted underline. Hover over it, or move the keyboard focus to it, to see the original words.
Only exact quotations are translated: the words in quotation marks that a numbered reference follows, and that the source contains word for word. A sentence that the model wrote in its own words stays as it is.
When you copy or export an answer, you get the original quotations, not the translations.
Why you cite the original
The translation helps you read the text. It is not a source:
- the model that writes the answer reads the original, never the translation;
- the quotations, the highlights and the bookmarks are on the original text;
- a machine translation can be wrong, and a legal term can have no exact match in another language.
Before you use a quotation in a pleading or an opinion, compare it with the original. See Citations and sources.
What it costs
A translation spends credits from the balance of your organization. A part that is already translated costs nothing, because the service keeps each translation.
The translation of a court decision or an act is the same for everybody, so the service keeps one copy for all users. The translation of your own file stays in your organization. Before your file goes to the model, the service replaces the names in it with labels, as for a question. See What the model sees.
